6 ways to find motels that allow pets
If you’re traveling with pets of any kind, you should be aware most motels and hotels do not accept them. But with a little advanced planning, you can find plenty that do.
- PetsWelcome helps you find places to stay while you’re traveling that allow pets. Input your travel route information and they find the right spots.
- TravelLodge is one chain that features a lot of pet-friendly locations, which you can find using their advanced search.
- DogFriendly is a site that specifically helps you find dog-friendly places to stay.
- Bring Your Pet works pretty much like PetsWelcome.
- AllStays allows you to look up a hotel or motel and see whether it’s pet-friendly – helpful if you’re not the one booking rooms (say, someone’s booked a block of rooms for a wedding or something), and you want to know whether or not you’ll need to make alternate arrangements.
- 1 Click Pet Hotels is another one that actually allows you to make bookings through it.

And if you want something to keep in the glove compartment for spur-of-the-moment, the AAA has published an annual book, Traveling with Your Pet, for years. When I drove cross-country with my dog, it was a godsend — even in areas where there’s no cell service, you can still figure out where to stay that night.
We ended up staying in a lot of Best Westerns — nice lodging, decent rates, some truly wonderful pet accommodations (rooms that open out directly onto great exercise areas & so on), and the chain seems really to care about pet lovers’ business.
