6 ways to find motels that allow pets

1176607_my_dogsIf you’re traveling with pets of any kind, you should be aware most motels and hotels do not accept them. But with a little advanced planning, you can find plenty that do.

  1. PetsWelcome helps you find places to stay while you’re traveling that allow pets. Input your travel route information and they find the right spots.
  2. TravelLodge is one chain that features a lot of pet-friendly locations, which you can find using their advanced search.
  3. DogFriendly is a site that specifically helps you find dog-friendly places to stay.
  4. Bring Your Pet works pretty much like PetsWelcome.
  5. AllStays allows you to look up a hotel or motel and see whether it’s pet-friendly – helpful if you’re not the one booking rooms (say, someone’s booked a block of rooms for a wedding or something), and you want to know whether or not you’ll need to make alternate arrangements.
  6. 1 Click Pet Hotels is another one that actually allows you to make bookings through it.

And if you want something to keep in the glove compartment for spur-of-the-moment, the AAA has published an annual book, Traveling with Your Pet, for years. When I drove cross-country with my dog, it was a godsend — even in areas where there’s no cell service, you can still figure out where to stay that night.

We ended up staying in a lot of Best Westerns — nice lodging, decent rates, some truly wonderful pet accommodations (rooms that open out directly onto great exercise areas & so on), and the chain seems really to care about pet lovers’ business.
