8 sources of free knitting patterns

by Jen (August 18, 2008)

There’s no shortage of free knitting patterns available online, and you can find them yourself through search engines. But some sources are better than others, and I’ve reviewed some of the top ones - as well as some lesser known ones - to compile a list of sites that won’t waste your time.

I didn’t include any sites that require you to register to get to the free patterns. These sites will take you to free patterns immediately, so you can start to work right away.

  1. Knitting Pattern Central and The Daily Knitter - these two sites link to a nearly identical collection of patterns, so you only need to bookmark one. Both are well-organized and searchable, and the links are up to date so you won’t waste time clicking to 404 error pages.
  2. Drops Design - patterns archived from their drops catalogs. A very nice collection - pick your language flag and start browsing.
  3. Craftown - a collection of unique patterns contributed by users. Lots of cool, unusual stuff here like knitted keychains.
  4. Crystal Palace Yarns - collection of patterns arranged by yarn type.
  5. Rhonda’s Barbie Knitting Page - loads of free patterns for Barbie clothes.
  6. The Knit Wiki - a community-run encyclopedia site collecting patterns, many of them vintage.
  7. Free Vintage Knitting - I find this one hard to navigate - some links labeled “Free Vintage Knitting Patterns” take you to a page listing patterns you can buy from eBay with a list of other links of interest (but no patterns). But if you dig around, there are some nice patterns.
