A month of Sunday dinners

I’ve been neglecting the Sunday Dinner column for a while, so today I’m going to give you a collection of links and suggestions.

Recipes

  • Hurry-up Ham and Noodles is a hot one-dish meal involving ham, egg noodles, creamy sauce and green onions. It’s easy to cook, and a great way to use leftover ham. And you can see the nutritional info for yourself on that link.
  • Goulash is another simple one-dish meal – beans, corn, hamburger meat, rice, cheese… what more could you want?
  • Chicken Marsala can be made quickly and easily, with the right recipe.
  • Moms Who Think has put together a whole month of easy dinner recipes, ranging from Tuna Casserole to less common fare like Crock Pot Burgundy Beef with Egg Noodles.

Too tired/hassled to cook?

Sometimes even the simplest cooking is just too much. When that happens, it’s time for a meal you can pick up or have delivered. You know about pizza and Chinese food and all the old standbys, so here are some other suggestions.

  • Quizno’s delivers, and you can even set up a free account and order online. I’ve tried this, and it got here on time, hot and just like I ordered it.
  • Grocers make prepared entrees and side dishes in their deli, which you can pick up, take home and serve family style. Whole Foods is a favorite for many, but I’ve found there are some local independent grocers who make a few dishes fresh every day, package them and put them on the shelf – and this stuff is at least as fresh and good as anything from Whole Foods. And you don’t stand in the checkout line for ten minutes. But any grocer – Kroger, Safeway, whatever – has a deli section where you can assemble a ready-made dinner.
  • If you order from restaurants, remember to serve family style. Most restaurant portions served as single dinners could easily feed two people, sometimes more. By dishing it up on one of your own plates at home, you can see how much you’re really eating. You’ll most likely find that two people can share one meal, or three can share two and you’ll have some leftovers. This will save you money and help you avoid being manipulated into eating more than you want.

Have a wonderful dinner!
