Alternative to iTunes and other music players (Windows)
by Jen (June 19, 2007)
Quintessential Player is a sweet little free music player for PCs. It does basically everything iTunes and WMA and some of the other big-label players do. Only it doesn’t seem to hog as much memory, which can be a problem especially on older PCs.
It’s got some great plugins, like Hotkey Plugin 3.0, which lets you set up your own keyboard shortcuts you can use from within other applications (skip to the next song without flipping to your Quintessential Player window). It’s also got a ridiculous number of skins, some of which are just cool-looking, others of which do neat stuff like taking up very little screen space.
I’ve been testing it our all morning on a computer that was too old to handle the last few versions of iTunes without grinding to a halt every time it switched songs. Quintessential is fast and responsive, and doesn’t affect any other programs running on the computer at all.
