An alternative to gift bows

by Jen (May 23, 2007)

Ribbons and bows can lose their shape in transit when you’re mailing gifts. And if you’re not particularly creative with them, they can get repetitive, too.

Check out this tutorial on making a Fanned Gift Topper out of some various sheets of decorative paper, using a glue stick (or double-sided tape), scissors (or a decorative hole punch) and a few minutes of patience. You can make them square, circular or something more complicated. The beauty of it is that it can lay flat in a box and then pop up once it’s unpacked by the receiver.

The site recommends finishing them off with a ribbon, but you could also play around with glitter, metallic markers, or puff paints. Cheap nail polish can also be used decoratively - it stays permanently on most anything other than nails. ;)
