Black Bread: The Tastier Whole Grain

1171388_out_in_the_fieldWhite and sourdough breads are favorites for many people, even though we’re aware that they’re not good for us. But when we’re offered a better option, wheat is the type all the health nuts rally for. Personally, I’ve never been a fan of wheat bread. I can taste the grains with every bite, and always need a topping of butter, jelly, or loads of peanut butter.

Thankfully, I’ve found a much tastier bread that still doesn’t leave me feeling guilty for having more than one slice. Black bread is a whole grain bread made from rye that has a delightful sour tang similar to my old favorite, sourdough. It’s in the bread aisle of any grocery store, next to your standard white or wheat, so don’t worry about having to find it at a co-op or baking it yourself.

This is the only whole grain bread that I can enjoy popping into the toaster and eating it without any fattening toppings. (It’s also great for settling upset stomachs, I’ve found.)

Rather bake the break yourself? German, Russian, and Ukrainian black bread recipes are displayed online for your perusal! (As a non-cook, I’ll just stick with Classic Black from my nearest supermarket.)
