Break your resolutions down into small steps

by Jen (January 2, 2008)

Let’s say your New Year’s resolution was to put $5000 in savings this year. That’s nice, but how are you going to do it?

Instead of having one big lofty goal - which is more of a hope, really - you need a plan. Break that resolution down into various things you can do to save money and make each of those things your goal, while still aiming for $5000 at the end of the year. This will keep you from getting discouraged (because you’re overwhelmed and confused as to why it’s not happening) and giving up.

This same is true with weight loss goals - maybe even more so. Let’s face it: some of us can starve for days and still not lose a pound. Instead of setting a goal of X pounds to lose, start making changes to your diet or your activity level. And your stress level (stress can trigger weird hormonal changes that make it hard to lose weight). Then, even if you don’t lose weight, you have still accomplished a healthier lifestyle, and hopefully you’ll be feeling better.
