Caffeine for a better workout
by Jen (June 5, 2007)
No Excuses Gym advises that having some caffeine before a workout makes you feel like you’re working less hard than you are, so you can do more and workout longer.
And here’s good news for those of us who can’t squeeze in that 30-60 minute cardio session every day: a recent study found that shorter sessions throughout the day, adding up to 30-60 minutes of cardio, got people almost twice as fit as one long session. It also indicates you should lose more weight that way.

Hm. I don’t know about using caffeine for exercise. I have found that listening to music, books on tape or watching a movie gives me much more endurance for exercising. My favorite trick for exercising is to get a DVD of a television series and only watch it while using your treadmill or exercise bike. Most of the modern tv shows are designed to keep you coming back for the next episode, so it helps encourage you to exercise the next day.

And for a lot of us, there are other disadvantages with caffeine that outweigh any potential benefits.
The DVD trick you’re talking about wouldn’t have any physiological benefits (like caffeine), though. It just distracts your mind from getting bored and focusing on signs of fatigue. Which for some of us (me too) is the main hindrance to getting a long cardio workout.
But for someone who actually has physical trouble building up endurance, caffeine should help with opening blood vessels to let blood flow better, which is what cardio is all about.
I’m no expert, of course.
