Make your office a nicer place to work

by Jen (February 3, 2008)

A lot of office spaces leave you feeling like either no one put any thought into them, or the thought they put in was pretty hostile toward people who work at desks. Those of us not actually lucky enough to have offices with four walls can find ourselves in cubicles where you can hear every phone call or paper rustle at ten or twelve other desks, with the computer positioned so that people can sneak up behind you.

Individually, none of these things sound so bad. But over time they add up. What can you do, if moving to a better space isn’t an option?

  • Chatterblocker is a blessing if you’re distracted or annoyed by other people’s conversations. It’s a customizable background noise mixer which includes male and female voices chattering as well as music, ambient and nature noises - excellent for canceling out conversations. I’ve been using it for months and consider it well worth the $20.
  • If people coming up behind you is making you anxious, get a small mirror and park it beside your monitor (or attach it to the side). This should give you a bit of visual warning before you hear a sudden sound and jump.

Any other suggestions?
