Clean sponges
by Jen (February 16, 2008)
There are several ways to clean a sponge, and if you do it every 3-4 days it should never get horribly filthy and disgusting. The easiest and most effective way is probably the microwave method, but you have to make sure the sponge is sopping wet or else there’s a fire hazard:
- Wet the sponge completely and do not allow it to dry.
- Put it into the microwave, and set it for at least one minute. According a study by the USDA, microwaving for one minute significantly lowers bacteria counts and populations of mold and yeast more than other methods.[3] Researchers have also discovered that after microwaving for two minutes, more than 99% of all the living bacteria will be dead.[4]
- Remove and let cool before using. Caution: Squeezing the sponge before cooling can cause severe burns.
There’s also a dishwasher method, a soaking method, and a number of tips for daily maintenance and what not to clean with a sponge.

I soak the sponge in white vinegar and water.
I leave it in there for a little while to let the steam help clean the microwave.
I believe that vinegar also kills germs.
