Scrape dishes before you wash
by Jen (March 15, 2008)
If you don’t have a dishwasher, there’s a simple way to make doing dishes much easier - by making everyone in the household help. Right after you finish dinner, that is the easiest time to scrape food off your plate. Make a rule that everyone takes his or her own dishes over and rinses them thoroughly before putting them in the sink to be washed.
- Put a brush or Brillo pad at the sink for dealing with cheese and grease, which can start sticking to the plate before you finish eating.
- Most food stuff and liquid will rinse off easily.
- Tell them to feel the dishes with their hands to make sure no “invisible” sticky stuff is left behind.
Scraping dishes takes 30 seconds at the most. Once everyone does their part, washing will be as simple as running a soapy dishcloth over each item and rinsing them under hot water.
