		<description>When I was an impoverished student, I lived mostly on homemade vegetable soup (plus homemade bread and purchased cheese  --  a very cheap and healthy diet).  I had such a complicated web of classes, research, and part-time jobs, I couldn&#039;t afford to be sick.  

I had read that &quot;hot&quot; spices did good things for the mucous membranes.  So when I felt a cold or flu coming on, I would make a pot of soup so spicy I&#039;d break out in a sweat from eating it.  It seemed to do the trick  --  not one of those nascent colds ever stuck around.</description>
