Cold fighting broth

by Jen

479243_soupHealth magazine has a nice article on foods that help your body fight off colds. I can vouch for several of these from my personal experience.

When I think I have a cold coming on, or even just know I’ve been exposed to someone who has one, I throw together the following:

  • Chicken broth (or water with chicken bullion)
  • Lots of garlic (fresh may be better, but powder will work)
  • Lots of onion (again, onion powder seems to do fine for me)
  • Cayenne pepper sauce (Tobasco or any similar product)

Garlic and onion both have antiviral properties to boost your immune system. Steam seems to help by lubricating your sinuses so you can flush out nasty viruses. Cayenne pepper is very soothing for sore or scratchy throats, plus it opens up your sinuses and adds a wonderful flavor.
