Cold water for laundry

by Jen (April 17, 2007)

I haven’t used heated water for laundry in years. Cold water preserves color better, still gets out stains, is gentler on material (I think; all I know is my clothes last longer) and saves you some on your gas or electricity bill. And things don’t shrink so much. In fact, the only time I use heated water is when I want to shrink clothes.

Also, I do all my "hand wash only" stuff in cold on gentle cycles. I also do some "dry clean only" silks that way and have never had a problem with it. I’m hesitate to recommend either of these even though I think they’re safe; you may buy different materials than I tend to buy, and that might make a difference.

Yes, I’ve noticed a change (a slight one) in my power bill when I go for a month with the washer turned on Cold Wash. A lower bill is a good change.

One of the detergent makers even makes a detergent for cold washes now. I don’t know if there’s really any difference with that formula or not. It could be a marketing ploy.

:D Yeah, they have a cute term for it: “re-marketing”. Like how Tylenol for migraines, if you read the ingredients, is identical to regular Tylenol. Duh! :D
