Conserve water in the shower without sacrificing your routine

1165884_water_dropsIf you’re in an area that’s low on water reserves and/or you just want to do your part to conserve, there are ways to use less water without giving up your whole hygiene routine.

Rule: Never have water running unless you’re under it. Turn water on only to get your body wet or rinse stuff off (or rinse razors off). Get wet, then turn the water off to do your lathering, shampooing, etc.

Suggestions: Take some of your routine out of the shower:

  • Use a leave-in conditioner instead of conditioning your hair in the shower (you might find these work even better than shower conditioners, too).
  • Don’t shave in the shower. If it works for your skin/hair, use a dry electric razor, or start waxing or using a depilatory.
  • If you need to do these things in the shower, make sure you follow the Rule, above. And combine activities: leave the conditioner on your hair while you shave, and instead of leaving the water running the whole time only use a trickle of water each time you need to rinse your razor.

You can save quite a lot on hot water this way, too.

I’ve heard for years that you should turn the water off during the shower. But I have double faucets where you have to adjust each when you turn them on. I’ve always felt that the water wasted while readjusting each time cancelled out any savings.

Jennifer, I would agree that’s probably the case with any shower faucet that you can’t almost instantly return to the right temperature. I’ve had some like that myself.

I wrote a later post that had 23 water conservation tip – that might have more stuff you can use:
