Dear Readers: finding and working with lawyers

562983_business2I’ve decided to start doing occasional posts wherein I ask you, my readers, about a topic I don’t know much about. For the first one, here’s a topic I know almost nothing about: how to find a good lawyer, and how to work with that person to get the result you need at a price you can afford.

What experiences have you had with lawyers? How did you find one (especially if you couldn’t find anyone who could give you a glowing referral)? Did you feel like you were treated fairly? What would you have done differently?

Please share your experiences in the comments!

I’ve worked for lawyers for most of my career, but they weren’t lawyers I could afford. I found lawyers through friends’ recommendations. They always seemed fair. I would advise people to list their issues ahead of time, don’t waste time telling the lawyer your anxieties if you can help it (save that for your therapist), and listen more than you talk. These things will keep the billable time down.

Oh, Dot, those are some good ideas! It makes total sense that if you organize your thoughts in advance and condense it to just the stuff the lawyer can actually help you solve, you’ll save on billable hours, and yet I never thought of it quite that way. Thanks!

I have worked with several lawyers for different reasons. Each one I found through friends or aquaintances. Each one has turned out to be very knowledgable, affordable for me, and helpful. Dot gave great advice about having your thoughts prepared ahead of time. Ask around and do your homework.
