Dehydration can be caused by low sodium
by Jen (April 8, 2008)
Sometimes I get dehydrated, and drinking water helps. Other times I drink glass after glass of water but still feel thirsty. This usually leads to miserable dehydration headaches. I recently found the solution: I need more sodium.
We hear about the evils of excess salt so much that I’ve avoided it for years - I don’t mindlessly salt food or cooking without tasting first, and I don’t eat salty snack foods often. But in the same way that it can make you retain water and feel bloated, it’s also what helps you retain the water you need to function properly and it is possible to eat less salt than you need.
Sodium deficiency is considered uncommon, so you definitely want to try increasing your water intake before increasing your salt intake. But as long as you don’t have a condition for which a doctor has advised you to lower your salt intake, it can’t hurt to try a salty snack food the next time you’re drinking lots of water and still feel dehydrated.
