Do you really need an eye cream?
by Jen (October 10, 2008)
I’ve used a separate eye cream from my face moisturizer for years, mostly because the face moisturizers said “Avoid contact with eyes.” Then one day I noticed my eye cream said it, too. Which is nuts. So I compared the ingredients, found nothing special about the eye cream, and started using the same moisturizer everywhere.
The results were actually an improvement. Paula Begoun explains this:
Ironically, one of the drawbacks of many so-called eye creams is that they rarely contain sunscreen. For daytime, that makes most eye creams a serious problem for the health of skin. You could believe that you were doing something special for your eyes, but you would actually be putting them at risk of sun damage and wrinkling by using an eye cream without sunscreen. This is another example of the way cosmetics marketing and misleading information can waste your money and hurt your skin.
My face lotion has sunscreen in it. Now there’s one less product I can waste money and counterspace on. And there’s one more step I can take: in the past, dermatologists have recommended brands to me that don’t have a separate face and body lotion - one size fits all - followed by sunscreen to every bit of me that’s not clothed (I avoid the sun by nature, so I don’t have to take anymore precautions than that). I’m thinking about going with one of those brands and paring my routine down to one cheap bottle.
