Don’t let people see your wireless network
by Jen
If you have a wireless network at home for internet connection, you know that when you sign in, there’s a way to see all the other networks your system can pick up. If they’re secured, you can’t access them (unless you know something I don’t), but you can still see them.
It may not make any difference, but I’m not crazy about broadcasting my connection name to all and sundry. LifeHacker has the solution in their Top 10 Wi-Fi Boosts, Tweaks and Apps.
Don’t want to advertise your network in the surrounding area? Turn off SSID broadcasting, which will keep regular old laptops and other devices from listing your network as one of the detected options. To do so, in your access point’s administration page, uncheck “Enable SSID Broadcast.”
