Dye yarn with non-toxic food coloring

by Jen (July 28, 2008)

Using chemicals to dye yard will give you good results, but if you have kids around - and especially if the kids want to help you - toxic chemicals aren’t ideal. Suse at Pea Soup has come up with an alternative that yields brightly colored yarn from harmless food coloring. The only part of the procedure that isn’t 100% kid-safe is when you microwave it for a couple of 5 minute intervals, so it’s very safe overall.

Her technique yields a beautifully colored skein of yarn. She was going for a variegated effect, but you can also dye in solid colors for more grown-up knitting projects. Check out her tutorial for the whole process: How to dye yarn with food colouring (and small children).
