Easy low calorie dessert that tastes rich and sweet

by Jen (July 18, 2008)

I’ve got a sweet tooth, but I know I can only tolerate so many dessert “indulgences” like the one in the picture before I’ll end up paying for it - too much sugar not only packs on pounds for me, but makes me feel tired and like I’m always on the verge of getting a headache.

Since cutting out sweets altogether is just not something I’m willing to do, and the occasional indulgences I allow myself aren’t enough, I work hard to come up with dessert substitutes that really satisfy that sweet tooth.

Chocolate Whipped Cream Jello

This one is so simple!

  • Sugar-free Jell-O: 10 calories, 0 carbs, 0 fat
  • Whipped Cream: you have a lot of options with whipped cream - low fat, low carb, etc. Whatever you choose, you’re looking at around 5 calories for 2 tablespoons and maybe 2 carbs and/or grams of fat.
  • Chocolate syrup: I use Nesquik Chocolate Syrup because it’s one of the few soy-free brands and soy doesn’t like me. I use about a teaspoon, which means about 24 calories, 6 carbs and 0 fat.
  • TOTAL: 39 calories, 8 carbs (at most) and 2 fat (at most).

All you do is dump the Jell-O in a bowl, put some whipped cream on it, and drizzle some chocolate syrup - a little goes a long way. I like this with cherry Jell-O - you get a rich chocolate cherry flavor - but any flavor you enjoy with chocolate will be delicious.

Jell-O’s sugar free puddings are another option, especially when you want that creamy texture, but if you’re watching carbs, be aware they still have 13 grams of carbs. But at 60 calories, they’re still a great choice. Tip: if you don’t like the flavor of the artificial sweeteners they use, add some real whipped cream - it disguises the flavor without adding many calories.

Pair this with some plain old coffee (iced or hot, with or without cream) and you’ve got a wonderful after dinner treat. You may also want to experiment with my homemade mocha, which is not terrifically low calorie, but has a lot less calories than most desserts.
