Easy steps to better eating habits

by Jen (June 3, 2008)

Eating healthy and going green are two habits that can seem overwhelming if you try to do them all at once. It’s a good idea to incorporate changes one at a time so you don’t get frustrated with all the adjustments. Make a change, get used to it, then make another change. It’s not a race: any change for the better is progress.

Bethany at DIYLife has a great post to help you get started. It outlines a number of small changes you can make both to improve the quality of food you eat and reduce your impact on the planet. Some changes will fit your comfort zone better than others; some will be easier to implement in the region where you live than others. The whole concept she talks about is called “slow food” - the opposite of fast food with its poor nutrition and cheap, anti-green farming habits.

If you’re a real fast food junkie and it’s only with the greatest reluctance you’re even considering changing your lifestyle, keep this in mind: health food and fresh food are different. We’re not talking about eliminating all that delicious fat you love or going vegetarian. Locally grown fresh food includes:

  • The best-tasting beef you’ve ever had - so much better than what’s at your grocery store
  • Eggs and dairy products - if you can get your hands on dairy and eggs that are really truly fresh from animals who are allowed the space to live like they were meant to, you will not believe how much better and richer they taste than the grocery store stuff
  • Fruits. So you’re not a fan of eating apples straight up? Try an organic apple pie. Try juicing your own fresh-picked fruit instead of going to Jamba Juice. I’m telling you, it really tastes better.

Of course, just because you reduce or eliminate your junk food intake doesn’t mean you can gorge on fats and sugars without consequence. But it’s a lot easier to improve your eating habits when you’re eating slow food because it’s more satisfying to start with.
