Energy Saving Application: “Local Cooling”
by Sarah (March 6, 2008)
You can save a surprising amount of power by turning your computer off when you’re not using it, but in addition to that, as long as you’re running Windows, you can download this application called “Local Cooling”. Basically, the application maximizes the energy saver functions that your computer probably already uses (turning off the screen, putting the computer to sleep, or shutting down after not being used for a while), but it will also monitor your energy usage and savings and provide you with ongoing statistics.
It’s free, it’s an extremely easy way to start thinking about energy savings, and the website also has a scrolling “Did You Know?” box filled with other tips about simple household energy saving strategies. Both the statistics from the application itself and the tips quantify energy savings based on both cost and carbon-emission, so you can look at how it’s benefiting you as well as how little things can make a pretty significant difference in the big picture.
