Fake a French Manicure the easy way

by Jen (March 18, 2008)

French manicures are more expensive and time-consuming than regular ones. They’re also hard to do yourself. Here’s a simple way to get the look without going through the tediousness or the expense:

  • Buff your nails. Get a four-sided buffer and use each side liberally on every nail until you get a great shine. Or you can polish them with clear polish.
  • Get a white nail pencil like this one from Sally Hansen. Use it on the underside of your nail whites to make them look brighter and whiter. You can press a little bit under the nail to make the whites even (most of us don’t have naturally occurring perfectly even whites).

The white pencil stays on surprisingly well, but keep the pencil with you for touchups just in case. Unlike a manicure, this is a look you can maintain as you go without much fuss. It won’t look exactly like a French manicure, but most people don’t notice the difference. And even if they do, who cares? It’s a great look of its own.
