Finding Trustworthy Health Information Online

by Sarah (March 7, 2008)

You can find answers to nearly any question you may have online, including about complicated health issues. But how can you tell what information is accurate, which sites are trying to sell you something, and whether what you’re seeing is just another urban legend? CNN recently featured an article called “Tips for Savvy Medical Web Surfing” with a bit of information on how to do just that, but even that advice can be simplified:

  • First, medical information online will never substitute for the advice of a doctor who can look at you in person, ask additional questions and verify any symptoms you’re talking about. And any website purporting to give medical advice should immediately acknowledge that.
  • Check for an “About Us” link. This should divulge any corporations the site is affiliated with, and if any of those corporations have a vested interest in the advice being given (eg. drug companies), be wary of the advice offered.
  • Look for websites that are endorsed by or whose information is backed up by medical professionals or professional organizations
  • Look at a variety of sites and don’t accept the first answer you find.

The CNN article features more points on how to conduct an in-depth and thorough search on treatment strategies and issues around specific conditions, but the suggestions above can be used even if you’re just doing a quick google search for remedies or symptoms.
