Firefox Plugin: Managing Research Citations

by Sarah (April 19, 2008)

If you’re writing any kind of research paper, one of the biggest organizational challenges is keeping track of your sources, inserting citations and formatting your reference list. The Firefox plugin Zotero is designed to solve a lot of those problems. If you’re only using the web for your initial search for books or journal articles, it’s very useful for keeping track of everything you’ve found - I’m extremely fond of the drop-down folder library-style organization system, since I find it so much easier than sorting, resorting and searching long lists. If you will be using a lot of PDFs, images or links, they can be stored right in the browser as well.

I’ve found that this plugin actually improves on many of the features offered by the standard, expensive professional reference management software available, and is far easier to use. Since it’s also entirely free, it’s definitely an easy way to go if you’re a student or do work that requires you to write papers or collect research data.
