Fitness Tips from NoExcusesGym.com

by Jen (January 25, 2007)

I just recently started working with a personal trainer when I got some free sessions included with a gym membership. All my life, exercise has failed me. It was painful and exhausting rather than invigorating. More than once, I hurt myself (which means no exercise for a while, and everything goes to pot again). I never lost weight or size, even though I was running myself ragged. And anytime I asked people who had good results from exercise what I was doing wrong, they basically acted like I was lying about my efforts: according to them, any effort at all should get results.

It’s just not true. Maybe for a few lucky souls with good genes. But for the rest of us, there are right and wrong ways to exercise. What I learned in phys ed classes and what I’ve seen on exercise channels and DVDs were apparently the wrong ways for me.

The trainer I’m working with now makes a ton of sense. She’s explained several things I’ve left out of the process in the past, and while it’s too early to see measurable results, my workouts with her leave me feeling really good, and that’s never been the case before. I’d love to digitize her and send clones of her out to all of you, but since I can’t, I’ll do the next best thing: recommend the blog of a physical trainer who shares a lot of that same info online. While there are tons of people online offering fitness info, I currently have the advantage of being able to say that this one sounds like my offline trainer, and makes a lot of sense.

The current article (as of this posting) is “10 Popular Diet, Exercise Myths”, and it’s a great starting place for information about stretching, weight training, diet, and working out. Did you know stretching should come after a workout, not before? That certain fats are good for you? That if you cut out too many calories, your metabolism will slow down rather than burn fat? That fat does not actually convert to muscle?

And since you know you can’t entirely avoid fast foods, here’s a great article on how to use portion control and make the best choices available from the menu so it won’t wreck your healthy lifestyle changes. Simple, practical advice, but these are the sort of ideas you need to arm yourself with, so you don’t feel “screwed”, give up and order two milkshakes a Giant Fries when you just don’t have time for anything slower than drive-through.

Definitely check out her Training Plans category for detailed instructions and drawings of exercises for stretching, beginner workouts, and weight training.
This is a paid post from PayPerPost, but the opinions expressed here are my own genuine opinions. I actually bookmarked the above mentioned blog and added it to my feedreader.
