Free computer games and software every day
In these frugal times, many of us are cutting back on shopping and entertainment costs, but we still need to have fun. If you like PC games or installing cool new software apps to play around with, there’s a way to do it: a new program, every day, free, plus a nice selection of free games. These are not little freeware apps.
Giveaway of the Day along with its new venture, Game Giveaway of the Day, works a little like Woot.com, except instead of discounts, they’re offering valuable software for free. Each day, you can download one free software application and one free game, but you only have 24 hours to download and install it before it’s replaced by another download. Again, these are apps that normally cost money and are worth it, totally free for 24 hours. After that, you can still download a trial of any program from the archives and then buy it, if you choose to. Most of the software seems to be in the $5-50 range, so this is a serious way to amass a nice Windows software library for nothing.
It’s worth noting that the Games side is not delivering a new app every single day. It looks like for a while they had plenty of games lined up, and now their supply is a little less reliable. But still, you can’t beat it for free.
You should always be concerned about viruses when downloading software, no matter how reputable you consider the source (yes, even download.com). Giveawayoftheday does not spell out their security policies or any particular guarantees, but I would imagine they screen them for viruses as best they can before offering them for download. Still, they can only screen for viruses the good guys have discovered (and certain patterns that resemble known viruses). Always take responsibility for your own PC’s safety – you can protect your PC for free.
