Get rid of stuff you don’t use anymore

by Jen (April 19, 2007)

I spent half an hour last Sunday doing something that’s still making me happy every time I go in my bathroom: I threw out tons of stuff. I’d have given it away, but it was all used cosmetics, and I’m not comfortable giving them away - especially if they’re more than 2 years old, at which point you should assume the product has gone bad, anyway.

I’ve gone through a lot of changes in the past year, so I had a lot to throw away. All my hair stuff for curly hair (now that I’m getting it straightened). All the lotions and cleansers my dermatologist initially had me try out but has since replaced in my regimen (she’s getting me excellent results, so there’s no chance I’d veer from her instructions). I got rid of an eye makeup remover because (A) I’ve stopped wearing makeup and (B) if I do wear it on special occasions, my current facial cleanser is so gentle it works just fine for the eye makeup (Cerave is the brand - I highly recommend their cleanser).

I did give away a couple of full bottles of stuff to friends. I had another couple of full bottles nobody wanted, so I just chucked them. It sounds wasteful, but so is holding onto stuff you can’t use. I don’t routinely buy stuff and never use it - like I said, it’s been a crazy year for trying new stuff with my skin and hair changes.

I put my makeup under the counter, but I’ll go through it at some point to get rid of anything that’s more than a year old - again, you can’t trust product freshness forever.

Now I can see the counter in my tiny little bathroom, and I have ample room. It’s a little bit of luxury, really, to have space in a small bathroom. Makes it seem bigger.
