Get your prescriptions delivered and save money

by Jen (May 1, 2007)

This tip is certainly not going to apply to everybody.

I have an insurance plan that offers home delivery on my medications. Far from costing more, I can buy a three months’ supply at a time and save - well, basically, I get the third month free when you compare it to what I’d pay going once a month to a local pharmacy. I’m surprised that some of my friends with similar benefits available don’t make use of them. One person told me her meds are so essential, she’s concerned the home delivery might be late one quarter and then she’ll be in trouble.

That’s understandable. But have you ever known a pharmacy to have to back order your prescription and not get it in for a few days? I have.

So far, I’ve been using my home delivery for meds for over a year. I’ve always had very quick delivery, very much on time. I place my order at the start of the month before I’ll need the meds just to be safe. I pay about $6 for shipping and handling, but again, I’m basically getting the third month’s meds free, which saves me $15-$35, depending on which medication we’re talking about (my actual savings last year were $140). Plus, I don’t have to go to the pharmacy and stand in line.

If you’re concerned about whether your insurance company will get home delivery right, try to find co-workers or friends on the same plan who’ve tried it and see what they think. Another backup I have in place is that my doctor generally has samples on hand (though this could change at any time) and also knows me well enough to give me an emergency one-month prescription if it came to that. This is something you can discuss with your doctor beforehand. Also, you can ask your doctor what they’ve heard about your insurance company’s home delivery.
