Got too much going on?

by Jen (January 31, 2007)

I’m at a place in my life where I can finally enjoy a few hobbies.  Somehow in the past year I’ve crammed my life so full of hobbies and activities that I’m stressed out all over again: not from work, finally, but from wanting to do more stuff than there are enough hours in the day for.

The usual solution to this problem is to cut out some activities.  Unfortunately, every single one I’m involved in is rewarding and enjoyable, which is the whole point of hobbies.  What to do?

I’ve decided to look at each of my activities and find parts of them I can cut out.  For example, with this website, I’m going to stop tinkering with psite features and enhancements and concentrate on posting (except I’m still looking for that theme that just screams to me “Yes, that’s Bohemian Revolution”).  For one of my creative writing projects, I realized I had way too many things I wanted to explore in it, so I picked out my favorite two things from it, and have narrowed my focus to those.

For my workouts, there’s really nothing I can do to save time - they take as long as they take.  But I’ve decided to make my sessions into mental health breaks as well as workouts.  While I work out, I’m going to let go of everything that’s stressing me out and think about positive things or nothing at all.  That’ll be a challenge, but once I get my brain trained, it’ll work.

And last but not least, I have taken every errand I can online.  I spend way too much time running from store to store to find the items I need.  By ordering online, I may spend a few extra bucks a month on shipping (though I can usually find such better prices there that it balances out) but I will have many hours more for my other stuff.
