Great calorie counting website
by Jen (July 2, 2007)
Not all calorie counting websites are the same. I find some of them err on the side of telling us what we want to hear - which is that the food is healthier than it is.
If you can handle the truth, you can find it at Calorie King.
This site has restaurant specific portions - from fast food to chain family restaurants. They also measure a lot of frozen and prepared foods you can get from the grocery store and cook at home. And finally, they usually have an average of "all brands".
Here’s how I use it. I just had a nice big burrito from a restaurant. Since it’s not a chain, then of course that restaurant doesn’t have its own calorie listings. But I noticed Taco Bell’s Grilled Stufft Burritos, and thought about it: yeah, I’d say it’s pretty similar in calorie content. Close enough. So I took that calorie measurement and used it.
Don’t think of it as being about dieting. Think of it as getting to know what you’ve really been eating. Even if you’re in great shape, it’s not a bad idea to measure what you eat to get a "baseline" for your healthy diet. Then, if you have health problems later on, you can track whether your eating habits have changed and might be contributing to the problem.
