Green Tip Roundup

Instructables is always a fun and useful site, but lately they’ve had a lot of really smart ideas for DIY energy savings.

  • DIY Double Glazing. Double glazed windows are amazing. They can cut down both on your energy bills and on the noise you can hear from outside. Shanitan found a way to get the same effect DIY-style (and it looks nice, too): “Double Glazing is expensive and retrofitting even more so. Using basic principles of keeping a layer of air in between 2 layers of glass, I decided to use perspex as the indoor layer and keep that on our windows with magnetic strips. Perpex has good low E properties, is relatively inexpensive, shatterproof and does not break as easily as glass.”
  • Make transport planters out of coffee cup sleeves. Ever wished there was a way to reuse those coffee cup sleeves you get at coffeeshops? Summation came up with something simple and beautiful: making temporary planters for seedlings and cuttings from your garden, and giving them to friends.
  • We’ve talked about DIY composting here before, and now Coopdaddi shows you how to make your own vermicomposting (worm) bin out of an old cooler: The Worm-A-Rator.
