Tongue scrapers

by Jen (March 24, 2008)

My new and wonderful dentist keeps introducing me to new, inexpensive tools to help keep my teeth and gums healthy.

It may sound like a medieval torture device, but a tongue scraper is one of those very simple items that does a surprisingly important job. It’s just a piece of plastic that you scrape over your tongue after brushing your teeth. But even if you brush your tongue (as dentists recommend, to get all the bad bacteria out of your mouth), tongue scrapers can get off more. You can test this for yourself by drinking coffee, then brushing your teeth and tongue with a regular toothbrush. Then use the tongue scraper, and you’ll see that the saliva it pulls away from your tongue still has some of the coffee color to it.

Not only will this little device help prevent cavities and gum disease by keeping your mouth the cleanest it can be, it can also help with chronic bad breath.

They’re super cheap (the link above takes you to DrugStore.com, where they’re $2.99 at the time of this post) and available at most drugstores. And they last for years.
