Homemade Play-dough alternative to Play-Doh

by Jen (September 5, 2008)

It’s ridiculously easy to make homemade play-dough or Play-Doh. There are a lot of recipes that involve cooking, but there’s no need for it. All these recipes should be stored in air-tight containers to keep them from drying out.

Recipe #1:

  • 4 tablespoons white flour
  • 2 tablespoons salt
  • 1 dropper vegetable oil
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 3-6 drops of food coloring

Mix the dry ingredients in a bowl. If you want food coloring, add it to the water and stir. Now slowly add the (colored) water to the dry mixture, bit by bit, stirring. Once the water’s all added, start kneading until you get the right consistency.

Recipe #2:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/3 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water
  • 7 drops food coloring

Same instructions as the first recipe: mix the dry ingredients, add the food coloring into the water and stir it, then add that to the other mixture slowly, using a spoon to get it mixed in well. Once you’ve added all the water, knead it until it gets the right consistency.

Recipe #2:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 tablespoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil

Put all the ingredients in a bowl and stir them until they’re thoroughly mixed, then knead. This one is super easy, but some people feel cream of tartar is too pricey.
