How to clean CDs and DVDs
by Jen (April 9, 2007)
To clean a CD or DVD, you need water and any brand of toothpaste:
- Use your fingers to apply water to the surface of the working side of the CD. Get it plenty wet.
- Take about as much toothpaste as you’d use to brush your teeth, and use your fingers to smear it onto the wet CD. Always rub in the direction of the CD grooves, around the disc in either direction. Do this for about a minute, until the toothpaste is everywhere.
- Rinse it in warm water at the sink.
- Dry it off. Let it sit on a paper towel for a few minutes to make certain it’s dry and there are no traces of toothpaste.
- Buff it (again, with the grooves) with the paper towel.
Warning: make sure no water seeps into the transparent plastic piece in the center of the disc, or that water can come out during play and harm your machine (not the CD, though). If you want to be absolutely sure, let it dry overnight.
