How to seal an envelope with a glue stick
by Jen (October 8, 2008)
I know, it sounds like the most obvious thing in the world, right? But recently someone complained to me that when they used a glue stick to seal envelopes, they didn’t stay sealed. It turned out this person wasn’t doing it quite right. Here’s how you do it:
- Run the glue stick over the gum on the envelope just once
- Fold the flap down into place
- Run your hands over the backside of the glue area several times, rapidly, heating the glue a little
It’s that last step that really makes it seal. There are brands of glue stick where it’s not that important, but especially with the cheaper ones, it’s really important to heat it up a tiny bit so everything melts together nicely.

Would it be too risky to heat the glue stick up in the microwave for a few seconds first or would it turn into a liquid to easily?

I’m not sure what the glue ingredients OR the container would do in the microwave, so that’s not something I’d want to try. It might be perfectly safe, but I find it really easy to just rub my hands quickly 3-6 times. That does the trick.
