How to tell if a cake is done baking

by Jen (February 27, 2008)

The best way to tell if a cake is done is also the simplest and cheapest method: stick a toothpick in the middle and pull it out. If any crumbs come with it, you’re not done baking. If it comes out clean, you’re done.

Another option is to wait for when the sides have pulled away from the pan. Both of these methods will work for dense breads like ginger, banana, etc.

NOTE: this doesn’t work for brownies, unless you want them to be as dry as a cake. For brownies, gently press the edge. If it feels firm, it’s probably done. Brownies are tricky, so once you find the right time for a certain brand or recipe, make a note of it so you know for next time.
