Insomnia: A Simplistic Remedy
by Silver (March 5, 2008)
Millions of adults are plagued with the inability to fall asleep at night. Whether it’s a medical condition or just too many thoughts swimming around in one’s head, staring at the ceiling has become a popular nocturnal activity. However, for many people, popping pills is a way they’d rather avoid in solving their problem. In fact, natural remedies have become strongly sought after resolutions.
Instead of focusing on a particular herb, pressure point on the body, or soothing sound, a far simpler solution will decrease your sleepless nights - and your pocket book spending!
Heat.
We’ve all heard that drinking a glass of warm milk before bed will help you sleep. It isn’t an old wives tale. Heated decaffeinated tea or hot water with lemon will work just as well. If waking up at night due to drinking liquids is a worry, another answer is at your disposal that requires even less preparation: Warmth against you.
A heating pad, hot water bottle, or even a rice bag placed in the microwave for five minutes can be just the solution that gets you to sleep at night. Place it on your stomach or back and let the warmth seep into your skin and relax your body into slumber.

This sounds like it could work, but there is one problem, sometimes when I cant sleep it is because I feel slightly too warm. I find the nights when I am having difficulty it can be a combination of may things: Too Warm, Too Cold, Too Thirsty, eaten too much (or drunk too much liquid), A little stressed, too many thoughts swimming in my head, anticipation of the day ahead, legs uncomfortable (sometimes regardless of where I put them), arms uncomfortable, stomach too busy, itchy toe, air too humid, air too dry, distant music/noises. I sometimes have nights when it does not matter what I do, there is always some point of minor discomfort which is enough to distract me from being able to sleep. Annoyingly, I tend to sleep easier when I know I do not need to get up for something the next day. When my alarm is set, it generally follows that I will not sleep as well.
I have given up caffeine, and I drink alcohol rarely. I find a day with a lot of physical exertion - like swimming. gym or moving houses tend to prompt a much better nights sleep - so my best tip is to get out and do something. Don’t overdo it though, a strained or sore and overtired muscle may just annoy you enough not to be able to sleep. When I was young, I used to rely on reading until I slept, but when married, that is no longer an option - perhaps this habit set a bad precedent and reading yourself to sleep should be discouraged.
