Keeping cats out of your garden

by Jen (March 26, 2007)

If you’ve got cats visiting your garden, there are some simple, cheap and perfectly humane steps you can take to discourage them.

  • First, if they leave poop, get rid of it.  Otherwise they’ll come back to the area, feeling it’s theirs.
  • Take advantage of their natural dislike for water and wet soil.  Keep your garden watered as much as you can.  You can also shoot water at the cat if you see it; use a toy water pistol rather than a garden hose, so you won’t possibly hurt the animal.
  • You can also dust the ground with various items like cayenne pepper or black pepper.
  •  You can also put catnip in the parts of the yard you don’t mind cats visiting.
