Wacky Wednesday: Make a hollow book to hide stuff

by Jen (April 16, 2008)

From now on, Wednesday’s Spotlight Tips are devoted to weird but wonderful tips. How boring would life be if all tips were practical and sensible?

Spotlight Post: How to Make a Secret Hollow Book

The first step into making the hollow book is to select a book. Make sure this is a book your own, and not one belonging to the library, or your family. I suggest rummaging through books at yard/garage sales.

The end result of this tutorial is a book that will look perfectly normal on your shelf, yet hold hidden stuff inside - just like in the movies.

This is not the simplest DIY tip we’ve ever spotlit, but it’s so cool. It also has some practical uses:

  • Put costume jewelry in jewelry boxes and put the good stuff in here. If someone breaks into your home and finds nothing but costume jewelry, they’re not likely to guess you’ve hidden your good stuff in the bookshelf.
  • Great place to stash a journal or other private items if you’re afraid your roommate or the kids will stumble onto them.
