Make power cords easy to identify

by Jen (June 27, 2008)

Even if you find a way to keep your cords neat and tidy, you still need to be able to identify which plug goes with which component so you can unplug what you need to, and not something else.

Here’s a really super-easy, cheap way to do it:

  • Cut an index card into thin strips - maybe 1/2 inch wide and 3 inches long.
  • Write the names of your electronics on each of them - put the letters to one edge or the other, not the middle.
  • Match one of the strips to its appliance. Wrap the blank edge of the strip around the cord, near the plug. Staple or tape it together.
  • This leaves the name of the appliance sticking out from it like a gift tag.

You could do the same thing with an adhesive label (like a file folder label), wrapping it in half and sticking the adhesive sides together. I prefer not to use anything gummy because cords sometimes get hot and the gum can melt and get icky, but either method should work just fine.

I use white-out (or black sharpee if a white cord) & write “V” for VCR, “S” for stereo, TV, “D” for DVD, etc. right on the plug.
