Money Saving Tips

by Jen (March 31, 2007)

Dawn posted a list of 25 money saving tips the other day, along with a ton of links to other sites with money saving ideas. I challenged myself to see if I could add any to hers:

  • Energy Star appliances. Spending a little extra money on these had made a serious positive impact on my utility bills every month. If you have the option, it’s really smart.
  • Candles can add both heat and light to a room, extending the hours of the day where you don’t need artificial heat or light. Remember to keep a watch on them, of course.
  • Get a Netflix account and keep your DVD watching under a budget. Also saves the gas it took to go back and forth to the video store.
  • When you can’t get the book you want at the library, look for used copies on Amazon - cheaper than new, and I’ve never gotten one that wasn’t in good condition. If you’re lucky, you may also have great used bookstores near you.
  • Buy and sell used textbooks or from a store in your area. Many teachers will give you the list of textbooks and reading list books well in advance of when kids will need them, giving you plenty of time to shop around for deals.
  • Let people know when their product failed, and they’ll often send you coupons for big discounts or freebies. Even if you never want to try that product again, they probably have others you might like.

What are some of your tips?
