Want less junk mail?
by Jen (September 4, 2007)
I’ve been looking for ways to get off mailing lists. I do everything I can to prevent getting on them in the first place, but there’s only so much you can do. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews about the DMA which, for $1, tries to get you off those lists.
Looks like there are other, more expensive services that some commenters in this post rave about. 41pounds costs $41 for 5 years. GreenDimes is a one-time fee of $15, but it looks like they just send you a kit and you do the work yourself (which is not bad).
I’ve had pretty good luck with simply calling people and opting out. Every time I give out my address, I tell people “Do not put me on your mailing list, or any affiliated ones, or anything. Only send me [what I've requested].” Doesn’t help with people who don’t respect rules, but most legit companies seem to comply.
My main headache is that stupid ShopWise circular. They cram these huge circulars into my mailbox at least once a week and I never look at them. They’re inconvenient, useless, and represent a lot of dead trees and wasted energy in printing something I don’t want. Fortunately, there’s a solution. Opt out using their website or their toll-free phone number (1-888-241-6760).
ShopLocal is another one like ShopWise. I have written to them to find out how to opt out - I’ll post an update when they get back to me. If they fail to get back to me, or say there’s no way to opt out because they don’t care about the environment and are too stupid to recognize that irritating the heck out of me is no way to get my business, you’ll hear about that, too.

Thank you so much for this information on how to remove our name from Shopwise. What a drag these flyers are, and what a waste to the environment.. Now all we have to do is sign a petition to get phone books on a “request list” where consumers do not automatically receive a new phone book unless requesting one.

That’s a great idea, Tim. So many phone listings are online that I rarely use a phone book.
