Quick tip: warm cold hands in a bowl of water

349395_light_and_water_in_a_bowl_3When I was a kid, the way we got chilled hands warm in the winter was to stick them under warm running water. There were two problems with this plan: one, that a lot of water got wasted while we waited for it to run warm from the faucet, and two, the effects never seemed to last long. An hour later, or less, I’d be back in there doing it again.

Last night I tried a different method: I put the water in a bowl and heated it in the microwave, then soaked my hands in the still water instead of holding them under running warm water. It worked so much better! Not only did it save water (my bill for water shot up 20% last month), the warmth seeped deeper into my hands and they stayed warm all evening – despite the fact I’m not keeping my apartment all that warm.

My hands suffer from arthritic and painful joints. When I had to spend several months doing filing, which made my hands so painful my medication didn’t even help, I treated them by keeping a crockpot about half full of water. When I needed to soak my hands in warm water for the pain, I simply added enough cold water to make the water a safe temperature to prevent scalding, and soaked my hands in the incredible comfort of warm water. Wish I could figure out something similar for my feet!!!
