Removing dental plaque with Plax

by Jen (May 12, 2008)

I naturally build plaque really quickly. When I was a kid with braces and the dentist and hygienists were seeing me a couple of times a week, they knew I was brushing and flossing yet the plaque just piled up anyway. They told me that unfortunately, that’s just how it is for some people.

Every time I’ve ever gone in for a six month cleaning, I’ve had to get the plaque scraped off. Until this last time.

I started using Plax just a couple of months ago. You swish it in your mouth for about thirty seconds, right before brushing. Unlike Listerine, it doesn’t set your mouth on fire. It even tastes okay. I didn’t think at first it was going to do anything.

But even before I brushed, my teeth felt cleaner. Then I brushed, and they instantly became whiter. The results were so quick, I was actually suspicious. But then I saw my dentist last week, and he reported I had no plaque. I told him I’d been using Plax, and he said, “Keep doing whatever you’re doing.”

Now, this is in addition to brushing my teeth at least three times a day and flossing at least once. And using a gum scraper. And a tongue scraper (no, not a medieval torture device). But I’d been using all those things for months and still getting plaque. It’s the Plax that’s making the difference. And seriously - my teeth are really white now, and I’ve done nothing to whiten them. I don’t even use a whitening tooth paste.

Rite Aid, Longs and other stores make generic versions of Plax. I haven’t tried them because the generics use soy products which I avoid, partly because I have some sensitivity to soy and partly because it’s a cheap filler ingredient used to replace higher quality ones so I’m always suspicious the quality won’t be the same when soy is included. If you’ve had good luck with generic versions, please tell everyone in the comments! They’ll definitely save you money. But to avoid needing to have plaque scraped out from beneath my gums (yes, that one is a medieval torture device) and to have whiter teeth, Plax is a bargain for me.
