Save files as PDF’s in Windows

845472_memory_stick_2If you have a Mac, saving files as PDF’s is built right in. This is great for saving web page billpay confirmations and receipts and anything else you want an exact replica of, just in case there’s a problem and you need to email someone proof that you did your part in a transaction.

With Windows, it’s slightly more complicated… but not much. Here’s what you need to do in order to be able to go to “Print” in any application, choose “Cute PDF Writer” as your printer, and save a perfect PDF copy of anything to your hard drive.

  • Go to the CutePDF Writer website. In the left sidebar, you’ll see two downloads: “Free Download” and “Free Converter”.
  • Download the Free Converter first. Once you’ve downloaded it, run it and follow the prompts to install.
  • Download the Free Download next, run it and follow the prompts to install.

That’s it! Now any program that has a print option should let you choose the “CutePDF Writer” as your printer from the dropdown printer menu. Name your file whatever you like and save it wherever you want. The CutePDF website advises:

Please note that some applications, such as NotePad, will automatically print to your default printer when you select the Print option. If you want to create PDF file, you may need to change your printer selection within that application before printing the file. This can typically be done from Page Setup.

That means you need to click the File menu and choose Page Setup, and click the “Printer” button (in Notepad) to choose Cute PDF. In some applications you might have to go into a Properties tab or something similar to find the printer selection.
