Throw an after-prom party, so you know where your kids are

434598_big_dayThe hours after high school proms are notorious for kids getting into trouble with drinking, drugs, driving and sex.  Sometimes a pre-emptive strike is the way to go: set up your own after-prom party for the kids, so they can get rowdy with supervision.

  1. Work with other parents so everyone can share the expense (unless that’s no problem for you) and the burden of getting everything together.
  2. Make it fun enough that kids won’t find it totally lame, sneak off to the “real” party and get into that trouble you’re trying to prevent.  What’s “cool” to the kids in your region will vary, but here are some general ideas. You could set up some karoke equipment; get a really big screen and do popcorn and movies; going a little more big-scale, maybe you could rent out a Chuck E. Cheese or something (actually, “renting out” almost anything tends to make a party sound cool).  If there’s a local food novelty (giant sandwiches, some unique sort of pizza) that kids like, by all means serve it.
  3. Let other parents know this is happening.
  4. If you have any concerns about making sure the kids get from prom to your party, send limos for them.  I’m not kidding.  It’s nowhere near as expensive as you might think.  Besides, do you know how many teenagers can cram into one of those things?  It can’t take many limos to get them home.  ;)
