Use a dowel stick to secure windows against intruders

by Jen

Windows that can be reached from someone standing outside are a potential way in for intruders. If your windows slide side-to-side, there’s a very simple, cheap way to secure those windows against being pried open.

Take a dowel stick that’s thin enough to fit into the track of the window – you’ll find them for under $1 at a hardware store or Home Depot. The square shaped ones are great, but round is fine, too. Cut it down with a small handsaw or whatever you have so that it fits inside the track. You can make it exactly the length of the track, or make it a few inches shorter: not enough for a person to squeeze through, but enough to leave it open for ventilation when you go to bed or are out.

Now if an intruder pops off the screen and starts prying at the window, it’ll stop dead at the dowel stick no matter how hard he pulls.

Combine this with the Door Jammer, and you’ve increased the security of your home for about $15.
