What’s Your WalkScore?

by Sarah (May 2, 2008)

Spotlight Post: WalkScore.

WalkScore is a mashup with google maps that calculates the “walkability” of the neighborhood around a given address and gives you a score (out of 100) based on how easily accessible various amenities- including grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, schools, parks and libraries - are by foot. If you’re looking for a new place to live, you can use this to help in the decision making process. Living in a walkable neighborhood will mean relying less on your car (reducing greenhouse gas emissions), getting fresh air and exercise as part of your routine (instead of having to find time to fit them in) and socializing more within your community.

If you’re settled in to where you’re living, the “score” of your neighborhood may be irrelevant to you, but typing in your address will bring up a list of nearby businesses of a variety of types. This may help you discover a new restaurant that you’ve never happened to walk by or encourage you to think in terms of where you can go by foot instead of continuing to go by car to old familiar locations.

My walk score is 45 I was rather upset with it. And I was surprised to know that there is another score called drive score to evaluate my house. I found the way to calculate it online at Fizber site (http://drivescore.fizber.com/ ). Ive got much better results 83.

Which one seems more accurate to you, given your experience, Warner?
